Allies in Action: A Speaker Series
Join Womanshelter/Compañeras in dynamic, virtual conversation about intimate partner and domestic violence. Allies in Action: A Speaker Series will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays in October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. An American Sign Language interpreter will be provided for these events. All of the events are FREE and open to the public! Kristen Faith – Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence Founder and domestic violence expert – will spark dialogue using her experience as a survivor and a thriver after an abusive relationship.
TerryJosiah Sharpe – one of the most sought after educators on healthy relationships – is sharing his story about perpetuating and overcoming abuse.
Tara Woodlee – Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence Board President – will speak about starting her advocacy after her daughter Ashleigh and her unborn baby were killed by Ashleigh’s boyfriend.

A highly-engaging and informed roundtable of leaders will enlighten and educate about the current experience of Massachusetts domestic violence services and prevention organizations.
The panel includes Womanshelter/Compañeras Executive Director Carmen Nieves, The Center of Hope and Healing Executive Director Isa Woldeguiorguis, Casa Myrna Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Brown and serving as moderator for the event is New Realm Coaching and Consulting Founder Elizabeth Solomon.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Womanshelter/Companeras invites all members of the surrounding communities to two unique events being held to recognize the importance of this issue.
Displays of Character: Men Reimagining Manhood
Tower Square, Springfield MA
This museum-quality exhibit features powerful portraits and interviews with thirteen MA White Ribbon Day Campaign Ambassadors who represent thousands of men and boys across the Commonwealth who have taken the White Ribbon Day Pledge to be part of the solution.
The display will last through the month of October with a special Opening Ceremony taking place on Tuesday, October 4th at 12:30pm
Purple Light Nights® – Light Up A Yard!
Heritage State Park, Holyoke MA
Join Womanshelter/Companeras and special guests as we light up the canal to bring awareness to Domestic Violence. Individuals are invited to show support by purchasing a yard of lighting to remain lit throughout the entire month of October.
The event will commence on Thursday, October 6th from 4:30-6:30pm with unique performances and exhibits, and conclude with a Lighting Ceremony.

Charity Domino Tournament
Womanshelter/Compañeras hosted its first ever Domino Tournament! The event took place as one of the premier events at the Hub at Gateway City Arts, and will raised much-needed operating funds for Womanshelter’s emergency shelter and community-based services.

Garden Sculpture Workshop
Award-winning sculptor, author and Holyoke native, DJ Garrity, will be conducting a Garden Sculpture Workshop with all proceeds to benefit Womanshelter/Compañeras. The three-day workshop offers a rare opportunity to create an heirloom quality garden sculpture within the medium of white marble for the home, garden or gallery.
Friday, May 13 to Sunday, May 15, 2016. 9am-3:30pm daily.
Wistariahurst Museum, 238 Cabot Street, Holyoke, MA
Workshop participants will use basic hand tools to create unique works in stone; the program has been well-received by gardeners, artists and the life-long learning community. The fee for the workshop is $450.00, and includes local white marble and the use of hand tools. No previous artistic experience is required. Registration ends May 6, 2016, and will be limited to 12 participants.

Raffle Eligibility and Limitations
- One-hour experience with a Holyoke Fire Engine – exploring and learning about the vehicle, ring the bell, hear the siren
- 15-20 minute ride within Holyoke city limits; recipients of the raffle do not have to reside in Holyoke, but will have to arrange for a pick-up location within Holyoke for the activity to occur
- Up to 3 children, ages 4-13, plus one adult chaperone, allowed on the truck for the actual ride
- Date of occasion to be determined by speaking with the Holyoke Fire Department contact person
